Dexron-IV (or Dexron-VI) ATF is a fully synthetic automatic transmission fluid primarily used in modern Motors vehicles, offering superior shear stability, better flow at low temperatures, and improved oxidation resistance compared to previous versions. It is commonly used for automatic transmissions, power steering systems, and some hydraulic applications, usually providing better protection against wear and heat than Dexron III.
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) generally does not need to be changed every time you change your engine oil. While engine oil is changed every 3,000–10,000 miles, ATF typically lasts much longer, with recommended changes ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 miles. However, frequent, low-cost “drain and fill” services are recommended over infrequent, high-pressure flushes to maintain transmission health.
